Top 4 Tips To Keep Your PC Safe

You don’t need to be an expert to protect your PC. A few simple tricks, free software, and a little common sense are usually enough to keep hackers out. Learn how to escape the most common attacks in ten practical points. Hackers are rarely very good. They prefer easy prey to technological challenges.

And understandably so: the Internet is full of open personal computers that can be remotely taken over in minutes. It doesn’t take much to change sides… and not be bothered anymore. So, without further ado, let’s dive into this blog and learn some of our tips to keep your PC safe and secure.

1. Keep your PC up to date

keep

If there were only one piece of advice, it would be this: apply the patches! Almost all incidents, including the latest major worm outbreaks circulating on the Internet, use a known security flaw for which a patch already exists. For computers equipped with Windows, the easiest way to stay up to date is to activate the update service, Windows Update, from the Start Menu or connect directly to the dedicated site.

Be careful; the latter only corrects the operating system and Microsoft applications: remember to keep up to date with the patches available for your other software! Unfortunately, there is no centralized update system. However, some programs have automatic update functions, which you should activate specifically.

2. Install a firewall

keep

Using a firewall when you are on a network isolates your PC from the outside world. It acts as a gatekeeper and controls attempted connections to your computer. Some of them also allow you to decide which applications installed on your hard disk are allowed to connect to the Internet. Since the 2000 version, all versions of Microsoft’s system have a built-in firewall that you can activate.

These products offer greater configuration flexibility and more user-friendly interfaces and allow you to control the applications that can connect to the Internet. Those of Windows 2000 and Windows XP SP1 only control incoming connections, while Windows XP SP2 offers a complete program. In any case, you can activate it by going to the “property” menu of the network connection (Internet or local network) that you want to protect. If you want to go further, you can install another program like ZoneAlarm or Norton Firewall instead of the system firewall…

3. Install an antivirus

keep

No one is safe from a mistake: even if you are confident and don’t click on anything, installing an antivirus is still a good idea. Malicious code can be lurking in the pages of websites you visit or Office documents you open, and the fun little programs you get from your friends can contain Trojans. Antivirus software is there to root them out.

Choose one that not only scans your files but also works with your email program to intercept mail before it shows up in your message list. Likewise, if you use instant messengers such as MSN Messenger or Yahoo! Messenger, you should choose an antivirus capable of checking files received through this channel.

This is the case with products from the leading players in this market, including those from Symantec and McAfee. And of course, once the antivirus is installed, remember to activate the automatic update of its signature database! If you have a broadband connection, you can opt for a daily update; you won’t see it go by.

4. Install anti-spyware

keep

“Spyware” and “adware” are not just the two latest buzzwords: they are two of the most widespread malware. Adware is clandestine software installed along with applications (often free) that you download from the Internet or even websites that you visit if your browser is not up-to-date with its security patches. Their role can be to display additional advertising during surfing sessions or to study your consumption habits. Their purpose is to inform the marketing companies that install them.

Spyware, on the other hand, is malicious: it is spyware whose role is to collect confidential data on your computer and transmit them to the hackers who installed it. They, too, can be contracted via malicious web pages or carelessly downloaded utilities. To get rid of them, don’t rely on your antivirus software: their editors have never really taken the trouble to fully fight against this type of malware. They are just starting to take an interest in it.

How Technology Has Changed the Queer Experience In 2022

We all use technology in our day-to-day life. Pride month is here, and we are queerer than ever. As an older queer Gen Z, the internet played an integral part in my coming out journey, and it allowed me the space I needed to learn more about how I was feeling. See, the internet isn’t all that bad; it isn’t a hellscape or one of the seven circles of hell from time to time.

I’d like to think that most of us queer kids out there have taken the “Am I Gay” quiz, which warms my heart. And if you had to take that quiz, the chances are that you are, in fact, some flavor of the LGBTQIA2S+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, 2 Spirits+) community. So, without further ado, let’s dive into this blog and learn how technology changed the queer experience.

History

technology

Throughout history, queer people have found a way to talk to each other within mainstream society. This could be through a coded language; Polari was a secret language that queer men used to reveal themselves to each other. Polari was vastly popular in the United Kingdom and was used primarily by gay and bisexual men to find potential partners.

There was also the hanky-code that gay men would use to show their sexual preference and role depending on the color of the bandanna/handkerchief and the pocket in which they were found (left/right). Women would trade violets as a way to declare their love in secrecy, and it was a way of live life and your sexuality in secrecy but also in fear and threat of being discovered.

It’s been 52 years since the first stone was thrown at Stonewall, marking the change of queer recognition and acceptance worldwide. Since 1969, a lot has changed, but there is still a long way to go before we achieve equality. Until 1994, WHO (or the World Health Organization) recognized homosexuality as a mental illness, and our predecessor fought to show that this wasn’t the case.

Pride is not just a celebration of our history but also a way to bring awareness to our group and how we can still do better to treat queer people like anyone else in society. Gender and sexuality are not binary; they are social constructs that we need to demystify. Pride has its roots in protest, and while it reflects progress, it still highlights current injustices and also shows our demand for a greater level of scrutiny.

Technology as a positive change

technology

Technology has played an important role in bringing about progress and has an enormous power to affect change. It allows queer people to connect no matter their physical and geographical space and reduce the feeling of isolation, especially when you love in a conservative place. Technology isn’t always a hellscape; the internet and technology overlord is going to take over sooner or later, and we have to accept it and harness them to our advantage as best as we can.

Technology also increases visibility and puts the spotlight on key things we want to highlight as a community. We, queer people, have used the internet to bring about a lot of change, from decriminalizing section 377 In India, the legalization of same-sex marriage in Taiwan, to workplace discrimination in the United States. We also use social media to uplift the voice of the downtrodden or people who have been previously marginalized and sidelines communities.

Queer culture and technology

technology

Queer communities thrive online, and there have been numerous studies around this. Interaction that once occurred in queer safe spaces like bars or queer-centered places can now occur online and just by creating online safe spaces. As queer digital and virtual spaces continue to grow, queer people can find each other outside of traditional spaces, and this can make us feel less ostracized.

It is important to note that progress has been made, but we queer people aren’t safe in every country in the world. Not going into Homonationalist discourses, it is important to know that in 71 countries, homosexuality is still illegal and criminalized under the law and is punishable by death in 13 of them. Having said this, it is still important to say that even in countries with pro-queer laws, the number of hate crimes is still consequential.

Queer people still face a degree of discrimination in countries that are “enlightened”, be it in the form of street harassment or discrimination in the workplace and everything in between. This is why queer people use technology to connect with each other, as it is a safe way to contact members of our community without the fear of being attacked for who we are or love.

5 Ways Queer Youth Use The Internet As A Safe Space

Pride month is right around the corner, and because of this, we wanted to see and learn how queer youth use the internet as a safe space and a platform to express themselves. As an older queer Gen Z, the internet played an integral part in my coming out journey, and it allowed me the space I needed to learn more about how I was feeling.

See, the internet isn’t all that bad; well, it isn’t a hellscape or one of the seven circles of hell from time to time. I’d like to think that most of us queer kids out there have taken the “Am I Gay” quiz, and this warms my heart in a way.

And if you had to take that quiz, the chances are that you are, in fact, some flavor of the LGBTQIA2S+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, 2 Spirits+) community. So, without further ado, let’s dive further into this blog and learn how queer youths are using the internet as a safe space.

1. A space to explore their identity

queer

According to a 2017 study conducted by Stonewall School Report, 90% of young LGBTQIA2S+ people say that they found themselves online, and this is why most of us queer people believe the internet acts as a safe space for our community. It is a place where people can explore content that they find inspiring and identify with.

For most of us queer people, seeing content that celebrates us can be reassuring and is something we thrive on seeing in the “real world”. The internet is an integral space for queer youth to express themselves in the content they create and share. Young trans and non-binary kids may also feel more able to represent their true selves online, even if they may do it in their offline life.

2. Being part of something

As high-schooler, a lot of you felt lonely, especially if you were the only out queer kid at school. And loneliness has for far too long been part of the queer experience, especially when you are younger and can’t travel to safe queer spaces. Most queer youth who live in conservative areas don’t feel that they have anyone else around them who they can identify with and are going on the same journey as them.

This is why many young LGBTQIA2S+ people use the internet as a safe space where they can feel part of a community and find people who share the same experience as them. It is also a supportive online community that helps other queer people blossom into their authentic selves. Queer forums or groups and conversations are a big aspect of this.

3. Space for guidance, help, and education

queer

Being queer comes with its challenges, from social exclusion to being disowned by your parents (it isn’t a fun experience, trust me on this one). Coming to terms with who you are in a society that doesn’t always accept you isn’t all rainbows and sunshine. There is always the fear of being not accepted, discrimination, and even rejection.

As queer people, we aren’t usually born in our community, and this is why we need the internet to learn the history of our people that is far too often not taught at school. The internet was a way for me to learn about the AIDS epidemic, Stonewall, the Matthew Shepard case, and so much more.

It was a way for me to connect with my community, and like me, 96% of young queer people say that the internet helped them understand their sexuality and/or gender identity. The internet is an important source of education information that can provide us with information that we weren’t taught at school.

4. Space for change

It is important to remember where we came from and what we have yet to achieve. So, despite the progress we’ve made, there is still a long way to go in order to attain true equality. Queer people still face discrimination because of who they love or how they look. The internet is a way for us to use our voice and fight for queer causes we care about.

It allows us to communicate with a large audience online, and this, in many cases, can lead to positive change both on and offline. Campaigning is an empowering and meaningful part of young queer people’s lives online, which helps them be included and listened to.

5. Representation

queer

Representation matters, and as queer people, we have far too much been on the fringes of society, and this needs to change. Thanks to the evolution of technology and the internet, we are getting the representation that we deserve. It contributes to our ongoing fight for greater representations of minority groups. One example o this is the inclusion of new, more inclusive emojis that have gender-neutral characters and even same-sex couples and families.

The internet allows us to find role models that look and identify like us online more than we do in our offline lives. According to the same 2017 Stonewall School Report, 95% of young LGBTQIA2S+ people say that the internet has helped them find a positive role model. This highlights the fact that the importance of seeing people who identify with you or how you look can and should never be underestimated.

– What is a USB key?

– Criteria for choosing the key: size, capacity, design…

– USB key: comparative table of different models

Along with the computer screen, the external hard drive, the computer keyboard, the PC camera, and the printer, the USB flash drive is one of the computer peripherals.

What is a USB flash drive?

A USB flash drive is a storage device that plugs into the computer’s USB port.

It is often referred to as the successor to the floppy disk.

The USB key is composed of a flash memory that works a bit like a hard disk.

Criteria for choosing the key: size, capacity, design…

If you want to buy a USB flash drive, here are the different points that we advise you to consider and compare:

Criteria for choosing your USB flash drive

Characteristics

Capacity

– The capacity of a USB flash drive can go from 256 MB to 1 TB, and this is expected to increase to 2TB in a near future.

– It is therefore important to choose your USB flash drive according to the use you are going to make of it and the type of files you want to store.

– For large files like video, it is better to choose a good capacity.

Size, design

– The models of USB flash drives are more and more varied with sober or very original designs, like animals, fruits…

– The size of the flash drives also varies, there are mini flash drives that can easily fit anywhere and flash drives whose size is closer to a small external hard drive.

– Some USB flash drives are retractable or swivel, which can protect the USB connector.

Robustness

– Most USB flash drives are made of plastic, but there are also light metal flash drives.

– Metal flash drives tend to be more durable than plastic ones.

– It is even possible to find waterproof USB flash drives.

Transfer and writing speed

– Transfer and write speeds vary from one USB flash drive to another.

Normally, a speed of 50 Mb/s will guarantee you a very good transfer time. The USB 2.0 standard can handle up to 60MBps data transfer speeds and USB 3.0 tops out at 600MBps transfer speeds.

– The transfer speed also depends on the type of compatible USB, a USB 2.0 High Speed or USB 3.0 flash drive which is faster.

Features

USB flash drives can offer different features:

Ready Boost: some USB flash drives offer the Ready Boost feature that is compatible with all Windows versions since Windows Vista. It is supposed to speed up the USB flash drive.

– U3 technology: this technology allows to run directly programs integrated into the USB flash drive like an Internet browser, instant messaging…

– Encrypted data: some USB flash drives can encrypt the data stored on the flash drive to ensure confidentiality.

– Data protection: it is also possible that a USB flash drive allows protecting the data so that they are not erased from the flash drive.

– Built-in antivirus: USB flash drives may have their own antivirus software, which will directly prevent malware from entering the flash drive.

– MP3: some USB flash drives also have an MP3/MP4 function that will allow you to play music directly from the flash drive.

– Warranty: some manufacturers guarantee their USB flash drive for 1, 2, 5 years, and even for life. You can therefore exchange your USB flash drive if it malfunctions during the warranty period.

Gadgets You Should Not Waste Your Money On (Part 1)

We live in a rapid-evolving world, and each day we are witnessing the release of new gadgets. It is important to know what you are investing in and ensure that you are not wasting your money on unnecessary gadgets. Let’s get into it and save you from using your money the worst way…

Gadget #1: Non-4G Phones

Right now, when buying a phone, you should make sure that it supports 4g connectivity; if not, you are wasting your money. There are a lot of phone operators that are now closing down their 3g services. It does not make sense to buy a 3g phone as the data packs normally cost a lot more than 4g data.

Gadget #2: Non-Branded Power Banks

Gadgets
Gadgets

Many businesses are giving away non-branded power banks after a certain purchase amount. Still, many people are persisting in buying non-branded power banks. You may be asking what the problem is with the non-branded power banks… Okay, first and foremost, they can damage your phone’s battery in the long run, but also there is a high risk of catching fires and even exploding.

Gadget #3: HD Or 720p TVs

With the invention of new, clearer and better TVs, HD and 720p are becoming outdated. There is nothing wrong with 720p, but it can be a nuisance depending on screen size, view distance, and how much pixel density bugs you. So, investing in such TV now will not be worth it.

Gadget #4: VR Headsets

You may think that virtual reality is not outdated, and you are not wrong – VR is still popular, but it still needs a lot of work. These headsets will cost you an arm and a leg while providing limited content. They are not supported in many apps and games, so you will find yourself playing the same games over and over till you get bored and here’s how you waste approximately 500 dollars.

Gadget #5: Smartphone’s Memory Card

In 2022, this is a big NO-NO! You do not need memory cards for your smartphones anymore. Even the most basic phones come with a minimum of 32 GB of internal memory, and you have a different storage platform that may help you stay within your range.

Gadget #6: Portable Gaming Consoles

Gadgets
Gadgets

Who needs portable gaming consoles right now? This makes a great gift to a child who is not allowed to have a smartphone yet, but let’s be honest, smartphones games have steeped up the games for since long- there is a myriad of them, from the intellectual to the athletic we all get our shares. So, it does not make sense to waste your money on a portable gaming console if you already have a smartphone.

Gadget #7: Non-Bluetooth Speakers

I have a lot to say on that one- I won’t understand why people are still buying non-Bluetooth speakers. Bluetooth speakers are easy to use, practical, and connected to almost every device. There are a lot of Bluetooth speakers available on the market, and they have different price ranges, so you won’t have to spend a lot if you don’t want to. There are a lot of brands that are cancelling their head jacks, so no Bluetooth is becoming the only option.

Gadget #8: Wireless Chargers

This will be a thing- just not right now. Wireless chargers have many advantages- don’t get me wrong, but it is still very limited. There are a lot of phone models that won’t mount onto any wireless chargers or charge as rapidly as they may claim; as it is quite a new product, you should wait for it to prove itself before spending money on that.

These are among the first things to never spend on if you do not want to waste your money. Let us know in the comments if you want to read part 2 of this blog…

Ergonomic Mouse

What Is an Ergonomic Mouse

Contents

    – Differences between vertical mouse and classic mouse

    – Characteristics of the vertical mouse

    – Price of the vertical mouse

When the hand’s wrist and fingers are badly or too much solicited, the hours spent in front of the computer can cause pain in the long run. Some computer tools, such as the vertical mouse, prevent or alleviate this.

Differences between a vertical mouse and a conventional mouse

The shape of the vertical mouse

The main difference between a vertical mouse also called an ergonomic mouse, and a traditional mouse (or computer mouse) is its shape.

This shape, which is higher up, and the distribution of the buttons allow:

    – To maintain the forearm, the wrist and the hand vertically, in a position close to their resting position

    – To optimize the use of the fingers

Health benefits of the ergonomic mouse

A vertical mouse is recommended when prone to musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) or tendonitis-type pain.

Unlike conventional mice, vertical mice eliminate the need to twist the wrist and forearm. The muscular effort is therefore reduced. The adjustment of the vertical mouse buttons minimizes the use of the finger extensor muscles.

The entire shoulder-forearm-wrist-hand-finger chain is better and less stressed, preventing or reducing pain.

The characteristics of the vertical mouse

Ergonomic Mouse

The following characteristics should be chosen according to your needs: office, games, graphics, etc.

Criteria similar to the classic mouse

    – Technology: optical or laser.

    – Power supply and connectivity: wireless with battery or wired with USB connectivity.

    – Sensitivity in DPI (dot per inch).

Note: For optimal performance, the vertical mouse, like the classic mouse, must be used on a mouse pad.

The particularities of the vertical mouse

    – Asymmetry: there are different models for right-handed and left-handed users.

    – The buttons: at least 3 buttons. You can configure the functionality of each button directly on your computer or with the software that comes with your vertical mouse.

The vertical mouse’s size must be adapted to the size of your hand; 2 or 3 dimensions can be offered depending on the model.

Tip: It is best to try the vertical mouse before purchasing, as there are different shapes. The grip should be natural. Depending on your use (office, games, graphics, etc.), the adaptation time for optimal use is from 2 days to 2 weeks.

Comfort at working

All in all, it’s critical to be comfortable and take care of your hands and wrists while you work, and if this is a situation you’ll be in for a long time, an ergonomic mouse is an obvious option.

I would tend to recommend the Logitech MX Master series which has been the best for years. Every refresh improves on the previous one, but the essential design remains unchanged, and there isn’t much that can be done to improve it.

However, it’s very pricy, and you might discover that another of these wonderful mice, or perhaps a trackball, better suits your needs. Your wrists will thank you regardless of which option you choose.

Price of a vertical mouse

The majority of vertical or ergonomic mice are priced between $10 and $50.

Some specialized sites offer a wide range of vertical mice, such as games or graphics, for specific purposes. In this case, prices range from $50 to $150.

Wi-Fi Gadgets

What You Should Know Before Buying Wi-Fi Gadgets

What You Should Know Before Buying Wi-Fi Gadgets

Your Local Area Network consists of a wi-fi connection, a wi-fi router, a wi-fi terminal, the wi-fi repeater, not to mention Bluetooth. What would happen to your ultra-modern gadgets without all these connections?

This post will explain how to surf the local area network with a wi-fi connection and how the wi-fi router can be the heart of your local area network to connect almost all your gadgets. We will return to the wi-fi terminal, wi-fi repeater, and Bluetooth in more detail in our subsequent publications.

Let’s delay no further…

Wi-fi connection: surf in local network thanks to wi-fi connection

Wi-fi connection: how to use/benefit from it?

Wi-Fi Gadgets

In addition to the mobile network, you can access the Internet from your cell phone thanks to a wi-fi connection.

To access a wi-fi connection from your cell phone, you need:

– a cell phone equipped with a wi-fi card: smartphone or multimedia phone;

– wi-fi access:

◦ internet connection at your home with a wi-fi router;

◦ a wi-fi terminal with free or paid access (restaurants, shopping centers, airports, etc.).

– Activate the wi-fi function of your phone:

◦ Settings → Wireless & Networks → wi-fi Settings → Enable wi-fi by checking the corresponding box;

◦ if you connect to a wi-fi router: select the network and enter the connection security key (WAP or WEP);

◦ if you connect to a wi-fi terminal: launch your browser and follow the connection instructions.

Advantages and disadvantages of the wi-fi connection

Wi-Fi Gadgets

Connecting to wi-fi from your cell phone has advantages and disadvantages:

Advantages:

– you don’t need to subscribe to a mobile package with an Internet offer;

– the speed offered by wi-fi is higher than 4G.

Disadvantages:

– the range of the wi-fi signal is limited: if you are too far from the router or the wi-fi terminal, you will have a limited or no connection;

– you can only connect in places that offer a wi-fi connection;

– some wi-fi hotspots are subject to a fee or conditions.

wi-fi router: the heart of your local network is the wi-fi router

To connect your various gadgets to wi-fi, you just need a wi-fi router. It allows you to share your wi-fi connection between your cell phone and your computer, but also your various multimedia equipment.

What is a wi-fi router?

Wi-Fi Gadgets

Internet connection sharing

wi-fi router is a device that allows sharing of a wi-fi connection between several devices.

All ADSL boxes on the market now have a wi-fi router function. This way, you don’t have any specific configuration: you connect your ADSL box, then connect your different devices in wi-fi.

This way, all your devices are connected to the Internet but can also be connected to each other:

– computer;

– cell phone;

– touch tablet;

– printer;

– television, etc.

For your gadgets to be connected, they just need to be equipped with a wi-fi function.

Internet connection amplification

It is also possible to equip yourself with a wi-fi router to amplify your network. It is then a router independent of your ADSL box.

This type of router is particularly interesting if your wi-fi connection is unstable or weak throughout your home due to:

– thick walls;

– several floors.

Good to know: A router for wi-fi signal amplification costs between $35 and $200. Or you can turn an old router into a wi-fi extender.

How does a wi-fi router work?

A wi-fi router allows to share a wi-fi connection between several devices:

– it is connected to the ADSL line;

– it transmits the wi-fi signal to the different connected devices.

wi-fi router: different standards

There are different wi-fi standards for both the router and the connected devices. The data transfer rate varies according to the type of standard:

Try These Gadgets To Improve Your Work From Home Space

Working from home has become the norm during this pandemic; most businesses are resorting to working from home to limit contact and protect their employees from the virus. Though it is important to set a schedule and fix some targets to be productive, you will need some gadgets to have a dedicated space to work.

We have gathered some important gadgets that can help you make your space feel like a place of business and be more productive and organized.

1. Bluetooth Keyboard

Keyboard, Hardware, Computer

Cable clutter is one of the most frequent distractions, which is why I recommend everyone gets a Bluetooth keyboard. You may want to choose one that can connect with multiple devices.

So that if you will be able to take it from your home to your office. Make sure that you know how to charge it so that you do not end up stressed with an uncharged keyboard and important deadlines coming through.

2. Bluetooth Mouse

Of course, you cannot buy the Bluetooth keyboard and forget about the Bluetooth mouse. You will need a light and comfortable mouse so that you have a pleasant experience. You do not want to choose a mouse that will lag, making you even more pressured; your work does the job already.

3. Comfortable Chair

While there isn’t a consensus on this, some studies have suggested that sitting for eight hours a day might cause some very unpleasant physical side effects, and while there isn’t one, it’s best to be cautious than sorry.

So better choose a comfortable chair for the long hours of work ahead. Choose an adjustable chair with good padding; select a chair with comfy armrests too. This will be the biggest upgrade for your home workspace, and your back will thank you.

4. A Large, High-Resolution Monitor

It can be quite hard to work on a small laptop screen when used to your large office monitor. One of the most effective ways to boost your productivity is to connect your computer to an external display, which greatly expands your digital workplace.

I recommend you choose a 28-inch screen with a good resolution so that you can have clean text, images, and videos. Although you can’t change the monitor’s position considerably, you can attach it to a separate stand to improve its ergonomics. It will allow you complete control over the position of your display if you want to take comfort a step further.

5. Noise-Cancelling Headphones

If there is a lot of noise, you will want to choose noise-canceling headphones. The headphones deliver excellent active noise-canceling performance and audio quality in a relatively compact package.

It’s comfortable to wear them all day without feeling like your ears are being pinched, or your head is being dragged down.

6. High Definition Webcam

Over the last year and a half, video conferencing has become an indispensable element of many people’s professions, and it shows no signs of slowing down. This fact necessitates the use of a high-quality webcam to appear professional.

Choose a camera with an inbuilt ring light; though it is an optional item, you will notice a difference with and without it. The camera’s light ring ensures that you never broadcast from a dark location, and it significantly improves the clarity of your video quality.

7. Dedicated Microphone

Microphone, Active, To Speak, Conference, Meeting, Meet

Now that you have a good webcam setup, it’s time to look for a good USB microphone to pair it. You do not want to have a great image but with bad quality sound, isn’t it?

You need to have the best gadgets to be productive and to be very professional. Let us know in the comments what do you think about the new phenomenon of working from home…

Huawei MateBook X Pro 2021 Review

We find it difficult to recommend Huawei phones these days since they no longer have Google apps. But the laptop? That’s a different story altogether.
The Huawei MateBook X Pro 2021 shows that Huawei has become something of a master of laptop building. It feels and looks fantastic, has all the performance you’d expect in such a small and light package, a great screen and good speakers.
It accomplishes the difficult task of making an expensive laptop worth the money. And yes, it’s a lot of money but the MateBook X Pro 2021 also has 1TB of ultra-fast SSD storage and 16GB of RAM. You’ll pay a similar amount or even more in some cases for the closest products from other manufacturers.

Design

Some notebook manufacturers overshoot the mark a bit when it comes to their top-of-the-line laptops. They try out ambitious design ideas or try to be the thinnest, lightest or slimmest.
The MateBook X Pro 2021 is what you end up with when you stick to the basics. You see the same approach with laptops like the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 and the Apple MacBook Pro 13.
The aluminum chassis feels fantastic and is virtually flex-free. We’re fans of the dark green hue. It’s bold without looking like Huawei is as keen for your attention as a reality TV star. There’s also a silver/gray version if you prefer a plainer look.
If you’ve taken a look at the 2020 version of the MateBook X Pro, you’ll notice that not too much has changed for the 2021 model. It’s very similar but that does not seem an issue when surely no normal person upgrades their laptop every year and this design’s slim screen borders make it appear up-to-date anyway.

Performance

It would be too much to call the MateBook X Pro 2021 a true-performance laptop. Like almost all its rivals, it has a low-voltage Intel processor designed to generate minimal heat so it can fit into these slim and light laptop shells.
However, Huawei does not do things by halves and only offers the best components that fit this mould – at least in the UK. You get an Intel Core i7-1165G7 processor, 1 TB SSD and 16GB of RAM. That’s the kind of spec you only find in the very best, lightest and slimmest laptops, often after you’ve made a series of expensive upgrades. That’s why the Huawei MateBook X Pro 2021 is so expensive.
You get tons of storage for games, apps and the data junk that accumulates after months of using a PC. Not everyone needs 16 GB of RAM but it means you can be more carefree with the Huawei MateBook X Pro by opening way too many browser tabs and it will still run fine.
The MateBook X Pro 2021 makes remarkably little noise when loading the device with a CPU-heavy application or game. Its dual-fan system simply never makes a particularly distracting sound in our experience and the fans seem to not kick in often with regular light work either.
This laptop also has pretty good speakers. They are not the loudest in its class but they have real bass, which is lacking in most cheaper laptops and even some at this level. This low-frequency substance is the secret sauce to laptop speakers that are reasonably satisfactory for movies or music.

Battery Life

Huawei claims the Huawei MateBook X Pro 2021 should last between 10 and 11 hours varying whether you stream video or do simple productivity jobs.
The laptop lasts almost exactly 10 hours when you write documents and fiddle around a bit in the web browser. Do you want a laptop that lasts a long time when you are doing something much more demanding? Then a MacBook Air or Pro is the best choice because the processors in these laptops use much less power under pressure.
An AMD-based Windows 10 alternative usually lasts longer as well. But with 10 hours, we are delighted with Huawei’s endurance in practice. The charger is much smaller than most, shaped like a phone adapter rather than a separate power brick and plug.

Verdict

The Huawei MateBook X Pro 2021 is a high-quality portable notebook that offers everything we are looking for when we spend a horrendous amount of money on a laptop.
The battery lasts for a whole workday, provided you don’t do anything too strenuous. The build quality is excellent, it’s a beauty and the screen is razor-sharp.
It’s a shame there isn’t a cheaper version with less than 1TB SSD and 16GB of RAM but Huawei makes other laptops if you want to spend less.
This is a solid and successful notebook that does not lose sight of craftsmanship and quality.
